โ†’ Character History
Personality:
โ€ขMister Smarty Pants. Owen is a very smart person, both book and streetwise. After seeing his mates become automobile mechanics and real estate agents, he wanted to do something different with his life. And that became the driving force for him to study medicine because even saving one life will make his studies worth his while. Eventually, Owen became a practising physician with a speciality in pathology. And even though he is not a medic in the most traditional sense, he has picked up on several skill sets along the way, such as xenobiology and being a sharp marksman.

He is a faster learner. One example of this is in Reset, where Owen is given an alien surgical tool capable of extracting foreign objects with no surgery. Within the first attempt, he failed miserably while practising on a dead body. But when it came down to where it counts and Owen needed to use it to save his colleague, Martha Jones, he extracted an alien parasite out of her body with no additional harm.
He also can be ridiculously cheeky about how clever he is. Like the time he ordered pizza under the name Torchwood, knowing Gwen would come to pick it up and try sneaking into the Hub.

โ€ขDevil May Care. Beneath the acidic wit and sardonic attitude, Owen is more than capable of expressing genuine love and care towards those around him. After being brought back to life with the resurrection gauntlet, that inadvertently summoned the living manifestation of Death itself to recoup the resurrection cost. Seventeen individuals lost their lives because of the incident. And despite being killed in action under Torchwoodโ€™s files, Owen practically pleaded with Jack to be let on back with the team. All because he didnโ€™t want the deaths of those seventeen people to be in vain.

Another example of this is his relationship with Gwen Cooper. At first, Owen acted aloof and mean-spirited towards her. But as their relationship continued to develop, he grew very fond of her. After the events of Countrycide, Gwen questioned her position within Torchwood; coming to realize how dark, violent and isolating this job can be. To which Owen sympathized and had an intimate relationship (even though Gwen was engaged to her fiance).

โ€ขRomantique. If youโ€™re looking for someone who knows a thing or two about courting and romance, then Owen has it all in spades (or hearts, I should say). Sure, sometimes he can act like a twelve-year-old. But typically, if you are out on a date with him, then he will be on his best behaviour; opening doors, making sure you sit first at the dinner table, offering his jacket if it gets too chilly. He will do his absolute best to make sure his partners feel like they're being treated like royalty. Sometimes that might play to a fault.

โ€ขReckless. Even though Owen is exceptionally brilliant, more often than not, he can act without thinking too straight. Several examples illustrate this. First, before the events in Combat, Owen was in a sexual relationship with Diane Holmes. Diane was an aviation pilot and one of three people pulled out of their timelines from the early 1950s. And despite their relationship being in the early stages, Owen was ready to propose to Diane. But she was not ready for that commitment with Owen. So instead, she got on her plane hoping to return to her respective timeline.

And that devasted Owen. And so his actions became more erratic than usual. Fast forward to Combat, where Owen is tasked to investigate an underground fighting ring where they were using an alien species known as the Weevils to have fights with humans. He purposely rushed into the arena to fight a Weevil and was nearly pulverized to death.

Losing Diane steadily reaches a boiling point where Owen wants to open an interdimensional portal (known as the Rift) to find Diane. Long story short, he shoots Jack in the head and opens the Rift. He doesnโ€™t find Diane. Instead, he accidentally releases a demi-god known as Abaddon. But Jack is immortal, so he comes back to life to help take down Abaddon. After all that is said and done, Owen realizes what heโ€™s done and immediately regrets pulling the trigger. Jack forgives Owen, and that causes him to sob uncontrollably, now coming to terms with his reckless actions.

โ€ขManipulative. Owen is, for lack of a better term, selfish. A medic in occupation, but he also falls victim to the simple vices in life, like food, sex and sleeping. And so he will do whatever he needs to do to get what he wants. For example (mentioned in Exit Wounds), Tosh recalls the time Owenโ€™s second week on the job. He was severely hungover, so Tosh had to cover for him and look into the Space Pig incident. And that became the standard for him; purposely coming into work late after late-night stints and hook-ups at the pub, hoping Tosh or anyone else can cover for him while he sleeps off the hangover. Another example of this is, in Everything Changes, he seduces a woman in a pub to come to hook up with him. Little does he realize that the woman has a boyfriend, but Owen turned the tides using an alien aphrodisiac and had a threesome with the couple.

Suitability:
Owenโ€™s tenure in Torchwood is contingent on staying curious about the unknown. Every week, the team deals with some sort of time-space anomaly because of the Rift in Cardiff. To have him suddenly transported to another world/dimension will give him the drive to do some digging around.

There is also a part of him that is confused about the โ€˜incidentโ€™ over at Pharma prior to his arrival at the ADI. He was shot square in the chest, a near-fatal injury. So whatever lucky second chance he got in life, he is going to take full advantage of it.

Powers/Abilities:
โ€ข Medical Science. Owen is a properly trained doctor with a medical degree to show. In the field, he is quick on his feet with emergency care. For example, if provided the proper tools, Owen can treat a bullet wound by extracting and keeping the wound from any more blood loss. He can also treat most traumatic injuries. If he is in a hospital setting, then he can be more thorough in his treatment, such as conducting emergency surgeries to treat his patients.

Prior to graduating from medical school, Owen did his thesis on immunology. He can properly throw his weight around if faced when dealing with detecting and treating diseases. There was an instance where the Black Plague made its way to the 21st century. Not only was Owen able to detect it, but also isolated the disease before it hit on a global scale.

When Owen is not treating others, he is throwing on his examination scrubs as a pathologist. Whenever there is an incident and a body is found, be the victim human or alien, it is up to him to determine what caused their death. Sometimes he may not be completely accurate, but he tries to keep an attentive eye about it.

โ€ข Combat. If found in a scuffle, Owen can handle himself in both hand to hand combat and in a gunfight. His abilities are not superhuman, but he can throw a proper punch and have it land where it needs to. He can push himself to handle a two against one fight. When backed into a corner, Owen get feral in order to win. Not ashamed of using any cheap tricks he knows in order to survive.

Entity Affinity:
Owen would be drawn towards The End. Part of the reason he became a doctor is if he can save โ€œone life, then thisโ€™ll be all worth it.โ€ As mentioned above, even though he clouds himself in this veil of sardonic standoffishness, he genuinely cares for the people close to him. And it might be a little ironic when you are employed in a place like Torchwood, where death lurks over your shadow constantly. But he will still fight tooth and nail to save others. Even if that means being at the cost of his life towards the end.
